Honesty’s Travesty
Excerpts from Arthur Thormann’s book called Honesty’s Travesty
Brief Synopsis
Harry Broughton, President and CEO of MDF Industrial Constructors Inc., headquartered in Toronto, asked Jack Malone, one of his successful division managers, to change his vocation and investigate MDF’s divisions’ construction claims, to determine their fairness and feasibility.
Harry explained to Jack that MDF’s division managers rely too much on construction claims — often to cover the shortcomings of their tenders, which harms MDF’s reputation. Customers do not mind so much paying for legitimate claims, but resent it when contractors make fools of them.
Jack was hesitant accepting the offered new position. He felt he was being asked to rat on his fellow division managers, but Harry told him that he would no longer be a division manager, since his new title was going to be Vice President of Customer Relations, with an increase in salary, and Jack reluctantly accepted Harry’s offer.
For his first assignment, Jack flies to Calgary to meet with Brian Forbes, MDF’s Alberta Division manager, and to assess Brian’s claim against the Consortium of a crude-oil upgrader in Northern Alberta.
In Calgary, Jack meets Mary Meier, Brian’s secretary, falls in love with her, and their passionate relationship adds spice to his new and demanding assignments.
